Regional beekeeping classes

The below listed classes are available to anyone interested in getting started in beekeeping or is simply curious about honeybees and beekeeping

The intent of this page is to list all beginners beekeeping classes that are offered by any of the affiliated regional beekeeping associations.

NOTICE: If you are working toward becoming an Alabama Certified Master Beekeeper, these classes do not meet the requirements of the Alabama Master Beekeepers lecture series.  

If you are a member of an affiliated regional beekeeping association and know of any planned classes, please send dates, times, location, sponsoring organization, point of contact (preferably email or phone number), URL of your WebPages (if your association has a Webpage) and any other class related information to the Webmaster.

Madison County Beekeepers Association

Practical Beekeeping Class

 

  This will be the 27 th consecutive offering of the Practical Beekeeping class.   This is a free class open to anyone (school age children and older through adults) interested in becoming a beekeeper or that is just curious about honeybees and beekeeping.

The class meets from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM  on the following evenings.  

First session Tuesday January 15, 2013
Second session Tuesday January 29, 2013
Third Session Tuesday February 19, 2013
Fourth Session Thursday February 28, 2013

 

Class sessions typically run the full 3 hours including a 10 minute break.     Each class will cover an different period of time in a year in the apiary.    The class is taught through the use of Power Point slides, video, and class participation.    Sign up soon as the meeting room capacity is 100 people (fire code).    All slots are typically filled well in advance of the first session.

 

No books are required, but you are welcome to take notes.

2013 Beginner Beekeeping Spring Class

 Saugahatchee Beekeepers Association

The Saugahatchee Beekeepers Association will be conducting its annual Spring beekeeping class, beginning on Tuesday January 08, 2013 and continuing for the next 7 Tuesdays, at 6:30 PM in the Lee County Extension Office meeting room in Opelika, ending of Feb 26.  The class is designed for aspiring beekeepers to learn beekeeping fundamentals so that they can:

  • Obtain and assemble the equipment needed for a colony or two of bees
  • Obtain the bees
  • Learn the basic information needed to be successful in their first year of beekeeping.

The class is set up so that bees can be placed in the beekeeper's location in mid-March, which is the beginning of the honey season in Alabama.

This is one class with 8 different sessions not 8 offerings of the same class.

The cost of the class will be $48, single or first member of a household family.  Included in the class fee is:

  • One copy of the reference textbook, “First Lessons in Beekeeping”.
  • Membership for 2013 in the Saugahatchee Beekeepers Association.
  • Light refreshments for the 8 class sessions. 

  • Additional copies of the reference book will be available for $13.00 each. 
  • Each additional household family member will cost $12.00 to cover the cost of their light refreshments.

The cost for the class will be $85.00 for individual students or $110.00 for couples.  The fee will cover all hand out materials and the book "First Lessons in Beekeeping".    There will be refreshments and drinks furnished at each meeting.    Door prizes will be given at each class (Prize total value for all classes is $1,500.00).   The final door prize will be a complete Bee Hive Kit.     The
class will be limited to 35 students.

Not related to the class, Lookout Mountain Bees will have 500 3lb packages of
 Honey Bee's with a Queen for sale at $95.00 each.   They will start taking orders December 1, 2012 for pickup March 16, 2013 (weather depending ).   They also stock almost any beekeeping supplies that a beekeeper might need (See www.lookoutmountainhoneybees.com).

Field Day March 30

The course is free, and designed to supply a novice beekeeper with all the information needed to take a colony from it’s inception through its first year.  We only ask that you be interested in beekeeping.  The class is free, and open to all who are interested in beekeeping.

The classroom sessions will be held at the Houston County Farm Center [corner of Ross Clark Circle and Rt. 53 (Cottonwood Rd)], start at 7 pm and run for about 2 hours.  The field session will start at noon at Landmark Park on US 431.  Because we will be working with active colonies, people coming to Landmark will need their beekeeping protective gear.

 Tuesday Feb. 26, 7 pm: Welcome to Beekeeping and Equipment Overview

               Introduction to beekeeping, equipment needs and sources, and equipment assembly

              This is a hand-on session.   Bring a hammer!

Tuesday Mar. 5, 7 pm: Biology 1 - The Three Types of Bees

 The bees in a colony come in three basic types – worker, drone, and queen.  We’ll discuss each type’s unique biology, life cycle, and functions.

Tuesday, March 12, 7 pm: Biology 2 - The Colony as a Unit

 We’ll discuss how the three types of bees form a working colony, and how the colony varies with the year depending on what is needed and what is available.

 Tuesday, March 20, 7 pm: The Beekeeper's Year and Bee Diseases

 We’ll cover how a colony varies with the season and how the beekeeper deals with each season.  We’ll also cover Alabama registration requirements and common bee diseases

 Saturday, March, 30 noon: Field Session with the Landmark Park Hives (beekeeping protective gear required!)

 We will meet at Landmark Park.  We’ll suit up, light smokers, and inspect the park’s hives, emphasizing proper hive working procedure.  We’ll find the three types of bees and probably a few unwelcome pests too.  We’ll also start a colony by hiving a package.
